Built by the Duke of Orleans between 1393 and 1407, the castle was besieged in 1617, and though it wasn’t completely destroyed, it was left in ruin for more than two centuries. Having bought it for less than 3000 francs in 1810, Napoleon I bought the castle in a time when there was renewed interest in the architectural heritage of the Middle Ages. Later on, restoration was overseen by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, an architect and theorist famous for his interpretive restorations of medieval buildings – and for his design of the internal structure of the Statue of Liberty. Today, the castle is an impressive structure which has been used as a film location for ‘Highlander: The Series’, ‘Joan of Arc’, ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’ and the BBC series ‘Merlin’, where it served as Camelot.
