From the beauty of Machu Picchu to the beaches of Brazil and the culinary delights of Argentina, it’s no wonder that South America is on the bucket list of many travellers! Therefore, we have put together a list of things you need to be aware of before travelling to these tourist hotspots.

Here’s some must-know information for your Latin America adventure: 

Currency Considerations

Throughout the regions we specialise in, the preferred currency (especially for optional excursions) is the US dollar (USD). However, there are some important considerations to keep in mind:

• In most countries in Latin America, vendors will not accept damaged USD bills, which include notes that are torn, scratched, or have any writing on them. Additionally, older USD bills might not be accepted. 
• You will not be able to withdraw USD from ATMs in Brazil and will need local currency for souvenirs. Therefore, you can either arrive prepared with cash or consider visiting an exchange shop. However, keep in mind that this option may come with higher exchange rates and fees.
• In Brazil and Peru, credit cards are widely accepted. However, in Panama, credit cards may not always be accepted in some cities. Be prepared to make cash payments for certain activities (including optional excursions).

Visas for your Visit

While the majority of countries in South America offer visas on arrival for tourists, it’s important to check beforehand. To do this, take the time to research and confirm the visa requirements for each country on your itinerary. You can obtain the most up-to-date visa information by reaching out to the local embassy, consulate, or a reputable visa handling company before your travel dates.

Altitude Awareness

Machu Picchu is an incredible bucket-list destination that you can opt into on our Sacred Peru tour but when visiting this UNESCO site, be prepared for the high altitude. If you suffer from asthma, it’s crucial to make sure you have your inhaler with you. We also strongly recommend packing a warm jacket, as the altitude can bring about temperature drops that may catch you by surprise. On our trip to the Iguazú Falls on our Brazil, Iguazu & Argentina Delights tour, you may also notice a change in altitude on the Argentinian side as Argentina has the highest altitude in all of South America.

If you are prone to altitude sickness, be aware that it is possible to feel the effects of the altitude even in some South American cities. However, this does not have to hinder your adventures! Speak to your doctor about medication and other ways to combat altitude sickness.

Health Check

For entry into Latin American countries, a Yellow Fever Vaccine isn’t mandatory. However, proof of vaccination might be required upon your return to your home country. To ensure you’re well-informed about vaccination requirements, check with your airline and consult your healthcare provider.

The countries on our itinerary pose low risk in terms of Malaria. But if you have any concerns or specific medical needs, it’s wise to consult your doctor regarding antimalarials. While antimalarial medication can be beneficial, our local guide cautions that certain types of antimalarials could potentially worsen symptoms of altitude sickness. 

It’s advisable not to drink tap water in many South American destinations. However, having ice in your drink is generally safe.

Ensuring you’re insured

South America is similar to many other popular tourist destinations meaning that tourists can fall prey to pickpockets and petty theft. It’s important to watch out for your belongings and keep important documents and cash close to your person. Remember to invest in comprehensive travel insurance before your tour’s departure. This safeguard ensures that you’re covered for any unexpected situations, offering you peace of mind as you embark on your Latin American exploration. Travel and Lodging

Exploring South America is a captivating journey into the heart of ancient civilizations. Yet, it’s important to bear in mind that while this diverse continent is rich in history, it may not match the same level of development in certain amenities as you are used to. Be prepared for some variations in standards compared to what you’re accustomed to back home. This might encompass differences in coaches (compared to our European coaches) and variations in the star ratings of the hotels you’ll stay in.

Epic Optional Excursions

When it comes to optional excursions on your tour, the payment process is straightforward. For most of the optional activities, you’ll pay in cash, using US dollars, directly to your tour leader while you’re on the tour. However, there’s one exception to this rule – the Machu Picchu excursion. If you’re heading to Peru, you’ll receive additional emails from us with all the details on how to book this particular adventure well ahead of time.

Luggage Limits

As you prepare for your tour, packing wisely is key to a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Anticipate a fair amount of both driving and walking, so prioritise comfortable clothing and a sturdy pair of walking shoes. Given the varied weather conditions you’re likely to encounter, we also recommend packing functional layers. Don’t forget your hat and sunscreen!

Keep in mind that internal flights come with strict luggage restrictions. To comply with these restrictions and ensure a hassle-free travel experience, pack lightly. You’ll be allowed one suitcase weighing a maximum of 15kgs (33lbs) and one piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 5kgs (11lbs).

During the tour, you’ll have opportunities to do laundry. Simply speak to your tour leader who is able to assist with when and where it is best to do this.

Top-notch Tour Leader & Tipping

Your tour leader is a seasoned expert in the region, dedicated to ensuring an excellent experience. However, it’s crucial to recognise that their role isn’t without its challenges. They strive to accommodate the needs of a diverse group of travellers, which can be quite demanding. Over your journey you’ll likely build a friendship with your tour leader, and it’s easy to underestimate the hard work they put into making your experience extraordinary. When your tour concludes, showing your appreciation by providing a tip to your tour leader is a meaningful way to express your gratitude.

In South America, the culture of tipping holds significant importance, extending to various services, including restaurants and local guides. It’s an essential aspect to bear in mind as you budget for your trip.
